We have our own printing-office at work where you can print out anything in almost any form (posters, calendars, notebooks, photo albums, postcards, etc.) with 50% off discount for the employees. This office is just a floor away from my workplace and it works really fast, everything is ready on the next day. Naturally, nowadays I am constantly fighting the urge to print every little piece of beauty I stumble upon on the web. It's a losing battle, too. I'm printing a map of the Lonely Mountain from the Hobbit tomorrow. *gg*

I always say that I hate movies. I really do hate watching them in general, it all feels like such a waste of time spent doing nothing. It's strange, because I can waste HOURS reading books and fanfiction and never get a good night sleep before work, but somehow with movies I'm counting every minute. TV shows episodes I can take, but not 3 hours of a movie, thank you very much. That is the sole reason I've never seen LotR Director's Сut before. 12 hours, are you kidding me?! :)

And then the Hobbit came out. And everything went downhill from there. I've been to the movie twice already and I'm going for the third time soon enough. And I'm counting days till the DVD release. And yes I took my time to finally watch that Director's Cut. This fandom claimed me back with force and there is no escaping it now. Not that I'm complaining, because... Guuuysss, seriously, the Hobbit!!! It's ten kinds of awesome and then some! Erebor and the Dwarves... EREBOR AND THE DWARVES!!! I literally died watching those scenes, I've always been a fan of this race, my favourite race in fantasy novels. And Erebor is freaking AMAZING! "Seeing Erebor was like sex to me" (c) someone on tumblr and gods do I agree with that! :) I can't wait for the next movie, I desperately need more of this awesomeness.

"Dear Esther is a poetic ghost story told using game technologies. You explore a deserted island, uncovering a tale of love, loss, grief and redemption, delivered through stunning voice-over and soundtrack and set against one of the most beautiful environments yet created in a game." (c) official FAQ

We played this game yesterday and I am still overwhelmed and a bit shaken by it. Of course, "game" is a strong word for Dear Esther, because it's all about exploring. You don't need to do anything here, no puzzles, no riddles, nothing. You find yourself on an isolated island, which was abandoned a long time ago. And then you just go wherever you want, enjoying the landscape and the story that would be narrated to you as you pass certain checkpoints. Oh and the music in this game! It is amazing, truly beautiful and ideal for the game's atmosphere. Overall, Dear Esther has the most unusual gameplay I've ever encountered, it's a new way of playing, indeed. It took us 1.5 hours to complete the game. Afterwards it felt like we'd just watched a movie.

Yesterday I stumbled across Keith Baines' retelling translation and abridgement of Le Morte D'Arthur: "Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur: King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table". And I did not like it even in the slightest. One just cannot add to the book so freely in my opinion. Of course Baines' version is much, much easier to read, than Caxton's or even Pollard's, but still, that's just not right.

The oath of the Knights of the Round table, as it was written in Pollard's modernisation:

"Then the king stablished all his knights, and them that were of lands not rich he gave them lands, and charged them never to do outrageousity nor murder, and always to flee treason; also, by no means to be cruel, but to give mercy unto him that asketh mercy, upon pain of forfeiture of their worship and lordship of King Arthur for evermore; and always to do ladies, damosels, and gentlewomen succour, upon pain of death. Also, that no man take no battles in a wrongful quarrel for no law, nor for no world's goods. Unto this were all the knights sworn of the Table Round, both old and young. And every year were they sworn at the high feast of Pentecost."
Source: Le Morte Darthur: Sir Thomas Malory's Book of King Arthur and of his Noble Knights of the Round Table
William Caxton (1485), A. W. Pollard (1903), and Sir Edward Strachey (1868)
New York: Macmillan, 1903.

By the way, I still remember, how interesting it was to compare modern English with English spoken (or rather written) in the 15th century. Caxton's original translation:

"Thenne the kyng stablysshed all his knyghtes and gaf them that were of londes not ryche / he gaf them londes / and charged hem neuer to doo outragyousyte nor mordre / and alweyes to flee treason / Also by no meane to be cruel / but to gyue mercy vnto hym that asketh mercy vpon payn of forfeture of their worship and lordship of kyng Arthur for euermore / and alweyes to doo ladyes / damoysels / and gentylwymmen socour vpon payne of dethe / Also that no man take noo batails in a wrongful quarel for noo lawe ne for noo worldes goodes / Vnto this were all the knyghtes sworne of the table round both old and yong / And euery yere were they sworne at the hyghe feest of Pentecost."

William Caxton, Oskar Sommer
London: David Nutt, 1889.

But what Baines did to this oath is unbelievable:

"This is the oath of a Knight of King Arther's Round Table and should be for all of us to take to heart. I will develop my life for the greater good. I will place character above riches, and concern for others above personal wealth, I will never boast, but cherish humility instead, I will speak the truth at all times, and forever keep my word, I will defend those who cannot defend themselves, I will honor and respect women, and refute sexism in all its guises, I will uphold justice by being fair to all, I will be faithful in love and loyal in friendship, I will abhor scandals and gossip-neither partake nor delight in them, I will be generous to the poor and to those who need help, I will forgive when asked, that my own mistakes will be forgiven, I will live my life with courtesy and honor from this day forward."

Where could he possibly get all that? And sexism? Really? What a nice wording for Middle Ages! :)

We'd like to change a little the way our house is furnished, get rid of old stuff, then rearrange some. I was trying to draw schematics for about half an hour (I'm so not good with that!), then gave up and installed The Sims 2 game. And wow, planning has never been easier! :D

I think it's safe to admit that I totally fail at blogging. The only website I'm updating regularly is my twitter, because it has this 140 characters per entry limit and that I can do. It's kind of fun, when you think about it: something that doesn't really make sense otherwise would still look "meaningful" as a tweet. :D

It's freaking "awesome" here (has been the whole summer): +30C at night and I'm kinda afraid to know what our average day temperature is. I only know that I can't stand this weather anymore, my body is refusing to function in this climate. It's like being on Tatooine when both of the planet's suns are up. And it's absolutely impossible to walk outside in the afternoon unless your last wish is to be burned alive. Thing is, for some reason that's the usual time for all of my appointments with doctors. I. Hate. This. Thing. *gg*

Okay, there are these series I like a lot, which used to be aired in my country a few years ago, but for a very short time, approximately 2 seasons. That's the only russian translation of the series. I couldn't find any english version, like the show was never aired in English speaking countries (which is really weird). And this show doesn't seem to have subtitles of any kind/language either. So I'm watching it in its original German. ...I can't speak German. I'm only "equipped" with an active vocabulary of a dedicated Rammstein fan and very basic english-based understanding of grammar. Oh yeah, I'm having a goooood time.

Anyone wants to try and guess the series I'm talking about? Hint: started in 1996, still running. :)

My life is crazy and full of random awesome stuff that tends to happen every now and again. But I'm the only one who thinks so. *g* Others would find my life boring as hell, I suppose. That's why I don't write here anymore. I can't for the life of me imagine what would be interesting enough to share it with you, guys. And I don't like the idea of flooding your friendlists with useless ramblings.
And I think I need another life. One with enough time both to live in LJ and RL. Because now they somehow refuse to co-exist. :(
